Prusias

Gemlik

Listen to the story

Prusias owes its name to Prusias the First, king of Bithynia, who rebuilt the city after it was destroyed in 202 BC. The site is Gemlik, on the Turkish coast of the Sea of Marmara. From the reign of Claudius the city officially returned to its old name, Kios, yet Prusias stayed in use into early Byzantine times, and the geographer Ptolemy still called it that. The double name misled the mapmaker, who drew Prusias and Kios as two separate towns and apparently set a distance of twenty-one Roman miles between them, though both names belong to one and the same city.
