Listen to the story
Placentia, today Piacenza on the river Po, began as a Roman colony in 218 BC, in the first year of the war against Hannibal, when six thousand new settlers, two hundred horsemen among them, were sent out to found it. It later became the end point of the Via Aemilia. The map makes a telling slip here: its pair of towers stands on the wrong bank of the Po. The town lay on the right bank, but the river had probably been drawn first, leaving no room. The Via Postumia to Cremona, a town ancient writers always named alongside Placentia, is missing as well.
