Cariente

Khobi river

Cariente marks the Charieis, a river of Colchis that the historian Arrian describes as open to boats, ninety stades beyond the mouth of the Phasis; the Roman writer Pliny calls it the Charien. Older research saw in it no true river at all, but a backwater or old northern arm of the Phasis itself, cut off from the main stream by silt. The map gives only the name, three Roman miles from Phasin and sixteen from Chobus.
