People
Colchi
Listen to the story
Colchi, the Colchians, were the people of Colchis, the land along the eastern shore of the Black Sea in what is now western Georgia. Greek myth made it the gold-rich kingdom of King Aietes, son of the sun god Helios, and home of Medea, the goal of the Argonauts. The Colchians were settled densely enough that Greek colonists founded only a few small towns there, such as Phasis and Dioscurias. Around 200 BC the country passed to the kingdom of Pontus. A small curiosity: the name appears on the best-known modern redrawing of the map, yet its own editor left it out of his lists and index.
