Crhepstini

Listen to the story

Crhepstini is a garbled name at the northern edge of the known world, beyond the Rhine, where the map lists the Germanic peoples. The ending does not occur in any known tribal name, and the letters, unusually in black for a people, seem to run several names together, perhaps confusing red and black ink in copying. The Cherusci, the tribe of Arminius who destroyed three Roman legions in the Teutoburg Forest in AD 9, are the favourite guess. Other candidates include the Ripuarii and the Crinsiani of a fourth-century list of peoples. Scholars admit that none of these readings works without forcing.
