Damasceni
Listen to the story
Damasceni names the people who lived around Damascus, the inhabitants of its surrounding countryside. That land was the Damascene, above all the great garden plain now called the Ghouta, which abundant water made extraordinarily fertile and which the Greek geographer Strabo and the Roman writer Pliny both knew. Scholars suspect the mapmaker meant the region rather than its people, and that the Greek form Damascene somehow acquired a final i instead of an e, since the other names nearby are clearly regions.
