Eniochi

Heniochi

Listen to the story

The Eniochi were a confederation of tribes on the Caucasian coast of the Black Sea, neighbours of the Colchians near the Greek colony of Pityus, now Pitsunda. Their name means charioteers. The Greek geographer Strabo and the Roman writer Pliny traced them to the chariot drivers of the Dioscuri, and so gave them Spartan ancestors. Ancient authors cast them as wild warriors and pirates in light boats, and Aristotle even as cannibals, until a Bosporan king subdued them in the late fourth century BC. The map shows them where they lived in classical times, before they migrated into north-eastern Asia Minor. That migration may help explain why Trebizond is drawn so close to the Strait of Kerch.
