Gandari Indi

Listen to the story

Gandari Indi, the Indian Gandarians, were a people whose real home lay far from where the Tabula puts them. Their land, Gandhara, stretched along the Kabul river and the upper Indus, and it is named as early as around 520 BC in the Persian king Darius's inscription at Bisutun. Yet the map writes them beside Palibothra on the Ganges, where one would expect the Gangaridae, a powerful people of the Ganges plain. The two names were already confused in antiquity, and the historian Diodorus calls the Ganges people Gandarians. The same spelling, again placed on the Ganges, turns up on an eleventh-century world map from Saint-Sever.
