Haci

Chauci

Listen to the story

Haci stands for the Chauci, a Germanic people of the North Sea coast who lived on both sides of the lower Weser. The missing letter is probably not lost at all: a single C, placed tight against the coastline, seems meant to serve two lines of lettering at once, perhaps as a deliberate flourish by the scribe. The Roman historian Tacitus praised the Chauci as the noblest of the Germans, a people who preferred to guard their greatness through justice, yet in AD 47 their light pirate ships raided the coast of Gaul.
