Insubres
Listen to the story
The Insubres lived in the Po valley of northern Italy, around the town they founded, Mediolanum, which is Milan today. They were a large Celtic people who fought Rome in 225, 223 and 222 BC, joined Hannibal and stayed loyal to Carthage until 203 BC. Yet they soon became thoroughly Roman, producing the comic poet Caecilius Statius and, according to the historian Tacitus, even senators. The map writes their name twice, once in red and here, unusually, in black, and both entries sit too far west of Milan.
