Iutugi

Juthungen

Listen to the story

The Iutugi are the Juthungi, a people whose name probably meant descendants or young men. Their name, in black ink, is written right through that of the Quadi in red, a way of showing that the two peoples' lands overlapped. They lived north of the Danube and the Altmühl, and the map shares with a victory altar from Augsburg the honour of being the earliest witness to them. That altar recalls a battle of 260 AD and many thousands of Italian captives. Raiding across the Danube as far as northern Italy, the Juthungi were repeatedly driven back, and are last heard of in 430 and 431, fighting the Roman general Aëtius.
