Lactoratesauci

Lectoure

Listen to the story

Lactoratesauci runs across Aquitania as one long word, and scholars disagree about how to read it. As a single name it points to the Lactorates, the people of Lactora, now Lectoure in the Gers in France. Many split it in two, adding the Ausci, whose capital is today's Auch and whom the Roman geographer Mela called the most famous people of Aquitania. The larger N of the province's own name does stand between the S and the rest. Holes in the parchment have almost eaten away the opening L. At Lectoure, twenty-two altars record bull sacrifices of the second and third centuries.
