Lupiones Sarmatae
The Lupiones Sarmatae, labelled Sarmatians on the map, are usually taken for the Lugiones, a single letter having slipped in copying. The name turns up again only in the Greek historian Zosimus, among the peoples Emperor Probus fought on the Danube. They seem to be the Lugii of the first two centuries, placed in southern Poland and Silesia along the Amber Road. Strabo called them a great people. Tacitus knew their sacred grove, and around AD 50 they helped destroy the Roman-backed kingdom of Vannius. Ancient writers counted the Lugii as Germanic, so the Sarmatian label is itself a puzzle.
