Vanduli is the map's name for the Vandals, written in black rather than the usual red and set close to the Marcomanni on the middle Danube. That placement captures one phase of their history. In the second and third centuries AD the Vandals lived as neighbours of the Marcomanni, and in 280 they appeared on the Danube together with the Burgundians, where the emperor Probus fought them. Their earlier home had been the Baltic coast between the Oder and the Vistula. Only in the fourth century did they move west to the middle Rhine, and from there cross the empire towards the Iberian Peninsula and Africa.
