Trumpli
Listen to the story
Trumpli marks an Alpine people who lived in the Val Trompia, the valley that still carries their name, near Brescia in northern Italy. The Roman writer Pliny traces them back to Cato the Elder, so the entry may preserve very old knowledge. In 16 BC the general Publius Silius subdued them, and they were attached to the town of Brixia. Their name was carved on the imperial monument at Aphrodisias in Asia Minor, and they supplied a cohort to the Roman army. The copyist placed them too far to the left, away from Lake Garda, which the map omits altogether.
