Vapii

Listen to the story

Vapii stands in red lettering among the peoples beyond the Rhine, its last letter faint and followed by a small black stop. No people of this name is known, and the word is usually taken as a garbled fragment. It may hide tribal names ending in -varii, such as the Amsivarii, who lived along the Ems, or the Angrivarii on the Weser. Another reading treats it as a corruption of varii, belonging to the preceding Chaci and giving Chauci Varii. An old guess at dwellers on the small river Wapel fails because no such people is recorded. Its place among the tribes beyond the Rhine has been read as a sign of very old material in the map.
