Tusci
Toscana and N Lazio
Tusci is the Roman name for the Etruscans, the people whose land corresponds to Tuscany and northern Lazio in Italy. The word first turns up in the Roman scholar Varro, and the geographer Ptolemy equates it with the Greek name Tyrrhenians. The Roman writer Pliny recalls how far the Tuscans once reached: Mantua was their only town left beyond the Po, and the Alpine Raetians were thought to descend from Tuscans driven out by the Gauls. Under Diocletian the land became part of the province of Tuscia and Umbria, and the name lives on in Toscana.
