Listen to the story
The Tauriani, better known as the Taurini, were a people living between the Alps and the upper Po, and their name lives on in Turin, the Roman colony of Augusta Taurinorum founded on their land after 25 BC. The historian Polybius, who first mentions them, counted them among the Celts, while the Greek geographer Strabo called them Ligurians. Their name has been linked to a Celtic word for high mountains, making them the people of the heights. In 218 BC they opposed Hannibal in vain as he entered Italy, and he destroyed their chief town. The Tabula sets their name too far west, away from Turin.
