Trogoditi Persi

Listen to the story

Trogoditi Persi, the Persian Troglodytes, names a people of cave dwellers, for that is what the Greek word troglodytes means. Ancient writers usually placed such cave dwellers in Ethiopia by the Red Sea, or west of the Lesser Syrtis on the African coast, so the map seems to have moved them to Persia, in the lands beyond the Euphrates. Their name stands in red, and unusually it is turned on its side, perhaps a deliberate effort to set it in the right spot even though the space there was hard to fit.
