Treveri

Listen to the story

The Treveri were a powerful Belgic people of the Moselle country, famous for their cavalry, which served Julius Caesar at the start of his Gallic War before the tribe drew away from him. Their land stretched from the Meuse to the middle Rhine, and from the first century AD vines grew along the Moselle. Their capital was Augusta Treverorum, the town that is now Trier in Germany. Unlike many tribal names on the Tabula, which drift far from their real homes, this one sits roughly where it belongs, close to its capital. Scholars assign such names of peoples to an older layer of the map, going back in essence to the age of Augustus.
