River
Albinia Flumen
Albegna
Listen to the story
Albinia Flumen names a river, the Albegna, a coastal stream in Etruria, yet on the Via Aurelia the name, drawn with no picture, most likely marks the road station at the crossing between Telamon and Cosa. A Roman sea-route register, which twice miscopies the name as Alminia, records a landing place at the river mouth, so the station probably stood there and served ships too. Around the mouth lie remains of Roman buildings with colossal statues and mosaics, a kiln for bricks and pots from the late second century BC, and salt pans worked into the sixteenth century.
