River
Armenita Fluvius
Fiora
Listen to the story
Armenita Fluvius is the river Fiora, which rises on Monte Amiata and runs about eighty kilometres through ancient Etruria to the Tyrrhenian Sea. Here it is just a name with no picture, and it probably marks a road station at the bridge where the Via Aurelia crossed the river. The rivers themselves are muddled: the Fiora has merged with the Paglia, which wrongly flows into the sea instead of the Tiber. Documents of 1114 and 1240 still call the river Armino; the name Fiora, taken from Santa Fiora near its source, appears only in the thirteenth century.
