Arnum Flumen

am Flußübergang bei Empoli [2] · Ponte a Signa (Lastra a Signa) [3]

Listen to the story

Arnum Flumen, named after the river Arno, was a road station on the route between Pisa and Florence, marked only by a name with no picture. Oddly, the river itself is missing from the surviving map, and the road is drawn along one bank throughout, so the station is hard to place. It probably stood at a bridge or at a mansio, an official lodging, beside it, either near Empoli or at Ponte a Signa, where an old bridge, perhaps Roman, crosses the Arno. If Ponte a Signa is right, the four miles from In Portu should read fourteen. The figure to Florence is missing altogether.
