River
Calor Flumen
~ Calore
Listen to the story
Calor Flumen names a river, yet the Tabula draws no river here, only the name on the road towards Aeclanum. The entry probably marks the bridge over the Calore, or the road station beside it. The Calore is a tributary of the Volturno that flows past Benevento, and the Roman historian Livy mentions it in his account of the war against Hannibal. A Roman register of routes lists a station called Ad Calorem, which older research equated with this one, but that stop lies further along another road.
