Caudio

Montesarchio

Listen to the story

Caudio is Caudium, now Montesarchio, the chief town of the Caudine Samnites, near the narrow pass of the Caudine Forks. There, in the second war against the Samnites, a whole Roman army was trapped and forced to surrender and pass under a yoke of spears, a disgrace Rome never forgot. The historian Livy even argues that the peace which followed was only a personal pledge, not a treaty binding Rome. Under Augustus its land was assigned to veterans and placed under Beneventum.
