Catorigomagus

Chorgès

Listen to the story

Catorigomagus is Chorges, the field of the Caturiges, an Alpine people whose name it bears. The pilgrim from Bordeaux lists it as the mansio of Catorigas, and all four silver cups from Vicarello name it. A late Roman list of the cities of Gaul shortens the name to the civitas of the Rigomagenses, and an inscription naming the civitas of the Caturiges shows that they were organised as a community. The map gives only seven to Embrun, where the other itineraries give sixteen to eighteen, so the figure has probably lost an X.
