Catippa

Asterabad [Kademga (Lapie)] (Miller) · Gorgan? (Barrington)

Listen to the story

Catippa seems to go back to Cathippus, a town that the late Roman historian Orosius places between the peoples of Hyrcania and Bactria. It is probably Zadrakarta, the capital of Hyrcania near the south-eastern corner of the Caspian Sea, now Gorgan in Iran. Zadrakarta was the fortified seat of a satrap, a Persian provincial governor, and Alexander the Great passed through it after Hecatompylos; the Roman historian Curtius simply calls it the city of Hyrcania, and Ptolemy its metropolis. How it relates to the other Hyrcanian towns, Sirynx, Tambrax and Tape, is still debated.
