Listen to the story

Castro Trentino is Castrum Truentinum, the fort of Truentum at the mouth of the river Tronto near Martinsicuro, where the Via Salaria from Rome met the Adriatic coast road. The Roman writer Pliny calls Truentum the only place in Italy still left to the Liburnians, a seafaring people from across the Adriatic. In the civil war it was one of the towns Caesar occupied, as Cicero reports, yet its exact site has never been confirmed by excavation.
