Road station

Castris Novis

between Pelendava and Romula

Castris Novis, at the new camp, was a station on the road from Pelendava to Romula in Roman Dacia, perhaps at the ruins near Drăgănești in Romania. On the map its name veers up away from the road line, as if squeezed in after an oversight, and the figure of seventy miles on to Romula is far too high. Older research found an explanation: seventy is the distance from Romula to Novae on the Danube, so the mapmaker or a copyist probably confused Castra Nova with Novae. The map sets it twenty Roman miles from Pelendava.
