Castra Herculis

wohl bei Huissen (Miller) · Arnhem-Meinerswijk (Barrington)

Castra Herculis, the Camp of Hercules, lay on the road from Leiden to Nijmegen in the land of the Batavians, probably at Meinerswijk in Arnhem in the Netherlands, or near Huissen. In 359 the young Caesar Julian took it back among the towns on the Rhine that he re-occupied, as the Roman historian Ammianus reports, and Julian himself spoke of a town founded by Hercules. The orator Libanius, too, praises Julian for restoring the city of Heracles. On the map the road on to Nijmegen is drawn as two stretches.
