Castello Amerino
(near, but not at, Horta) (Barrington)
Listen to the story
Castello Amerino, the fort of Ameria, guarded the Via Amerina where it crossed the Tiber, probably by the river port below Orte, the Etruscan town of Horta on its volcanic hill. A bridge linked the town with a harbour village on the far bank, where remains of quays, warehouses and baths have been found. Whether fort and town were really one place is debated; the list of places compiled in Ravenna names Ameria twice, and the second may well be this fort.
