Castris Rubris

Kastrazarba

Castris Rubris looks like Latin for 'at the red camp', but it is a Thracian name bent into Latin: the route lists write Castra Iarba and Castozobra, and Procopius Kastrazarba. The station lay on the main road from Philippopolis to Adrianople, where the road from Beroe joined it, probably on the south-western slope of the Sakar hills. A milestone set up by the governor Rutilius Pudens Crispinus shows that it belonged to the territory of Adrianople. Justinian restored the fort. On the map the stretch on to Burdenis is drawn as two, with an extra kink and no name.
