Road station
Alarante
Le Monêtier d´Allemont
Le Monêtier-Allemont, on the Durance between Sisteron and Gap, is where the map's Alarante lay, a station in the land of the Vocontii on the road from Arles through the Cottian Alps to Milan. The true name was Alabon: the Roman register of routes and the silver cups from Vicarello write Alabonte, and the medieval monastery and castle of Alamon kept the name alive. Inscriptions found there include a dedication to Silvanus. The map garbles the name, and then, oddly, writes it a second time at the next station.
