Alba

Albe

Listen to the story

Alba, Alba Fucens, high above the old Fucine lake near Avezzano, was founded in 304 BC as a Latin colony of six thousand settlers to hold a key road junction in the mountains. Its strong walls made it Rome's prison for fallen kings: Syphax of Numidia, Perseus of Macedon and Bituitus, king of the Gallic Arverni, were all held in custody here. Its forum, temples, theatre and amphitheatre have been excavated since 1949.
