Albingauno

Albegna (Barrington) · Albenga (Miller)

Albingavno is Albingaunum, today Albenga in Italy, the town of the Ligurian Ingauni by the sea. The Roman writer Pliny remarks how hard it is to say where such peoples came from, since the Ingauni had been given new land again and again. In 69 the partisans of Otho occupied the town; later it was the birthplace of the usurper Proculus, and in 354 the emperor Constantius restored its walls, forum and harbour. Remains of an early Christian baptistery survive. On the map the middle of the name is smudged, and older copies read it differently.
