Alta Ripa

Tolna

Listen to the story

Altaripa, Alta Ripa, the high bank, was a station and fort on the Danube in Pannonia, at Tolna in Hungary, on the road from Aquincum down the river to Viminacium; the bank here is raised all along. A Roman register of routes calls it Ripa Alta, and a late Roman list of garrisons places two cavalry units here, Dalmatian horsemen and a troop of Stablesian horse. It is not the Alta Ripa on the Rhine, today Altrip near Speyer.
