Alba Pompeia

Alba

Alba Pompeia is Alba in Piedmont, on the Tanaro, a place inhabited since the early New Stone Age. Its Roman name probably honours Pompeius Strabo, the father of Pompey the Great, who seems to have made it a town; an inscription naming Scipio Africanus as its founder is a forgery. Alba was the birthplace of the emperor Pertinax, and by 459 at the latest it had a bishop. On the map the road line runs on under the name, perhaps a slip of the copyist, perhaps to make sure readers noticed the whole name, and the road to Asti wrongly runs by way of Pollentia.
