Albentimillo

Ventimiglia

Albentimillo is Albintimilium, today Ventimiglia in Italy, the town of the Ligurian Intemelii at the mouth of the river Rutuba, which the Greek geographer Strabo calls a sizeable city. A letter to Cicero reports in 49 BC that the Intemelii were in arms, and in 69 the soldiers of the emperor Otho plundered the town. Its ruins, with a theatre, baths and walls, lie in the plain of the Nervia. Milestones found at Ventimiglia count five hundred and ninety Roman miles, about eight hundred and seventy kilometres, from Rome by way of Piacenza. On the map the name is now hard to read.
