Alaunio

Pied d’Aulun, near Notre-Dame des Anges

Alaunio was a station on the great road from Turin to Arles, in the land of the Vocontii south of Sisteron. Its name seems to survive in Aulun, and older research judged the most likely site to be Notre-Dame-des-Anges on the Lauzon, where aqueducts and inscriptions, since lost, were found. The silver cups from Vicarello list it too. The map gives fourteen to Sisteron, but the cups and the Roman register of routes agree on twenty-four, so the map's figure is too small.
