Listen to the story
Agvrio is Agyrium, now Agira, one of the oldest towns in the interior of Sicily, where Heracles himself was said to have stopped and was worshipped ever after. Its tyrant Agyris was the mightiest ruler inland in the days of Dionysius of Syracuse. After Timoleon drove out the last tyrant in 339 BC, he settled Greek colonists here and built a theatre second only to that of Syracuse. The historian Diodorus was born here.
