Agrigento

Agrigento (Barrington) · Girgenti (Miller)

Listen to the story

Agrigento is Akragas, the Roman Agrigentum, founded around 582 BC by colonists from Gela and Rhodes, which the poet Pindar called the most beautiful city of mortals. It was the city of the tyrant Phalaris and of the philosopher Empedocles, and its temple of Olympian Zeus, whose roof was held up by stone giants more than seven metres tall, was still unfinished when Carthage sacked the city in 406 BC. Its row of Doric temples still stands along the ridge.
