Agris

near Palazzolo Acreide

Listen to the story

Agris is Acrae, the hill fortress near Palazzolo Acreide that Syracuse founded around 664 BC. Inscriptions name its sanctuaries of Artemis, Aphrodite and Kore, and a gate called the Selinuntine gate; south of the town lies a strange cemetery with figures carved into the living rock, and in late antiquity a Christian community buried its dead in catacombs here. On the map the distance to Syracuse is split, part on the road line and part above it.
