Agira

Vitrinitsa

Agira is Aigeira, near Vitrinitsa in Greece, one of the twelve old cities of Achaea, set on steep hills above the Gulf of Corinth and looking across the water to Mount Parnassus. In Homer it is still called Hyperesia; the new name, from the Greek word for goat, was said to recall a night when the townspeople tied torches to the horns of goats, and the attacking Sicyonians, taking them for a relief army, fled. The Roman writer Pliny tells of a priestess of Earth here who drank bull's blood before going down into a cave. The map has lost a letter, as with Agion.
