Road station
Aethna
S. Maria di Licodia (Miller) · Paternò (Barrington)
Listen to the story
Aethna might seem to label the volcano drawn just above it, but a Roman register of routes shows that it was a station: the town of Aetna on the southern slopes of the mountain near Paternò, from which, as the Greek geographer Strabo says, travellers usually set out to climb Etna. It was founded by settlers driven out of Catana, and later suffered under the governor Verres. On the map both Catana and the distance to it have dropped out.
