Listen to the story
Aequo Tutico, Aequum Tuticum, at San Eleuterio near Ariano Irpino, was never more than a roadside settlement, yet it was a key junction: here the Via Herculia branched off from the Via Traiana towards Lucania, and a Roman register of routes notes that Campania ended here. The poet Horace mentions a little town whose name will not fit into verse, which older research took to be this one. The pilgrim from Bordeaux knew it as the great Aequum.
