Aeclano

Mirabella Eclano

Listen to the story

Aeclano is Aeclanum, near Mirabella Eclano, a town of the Hirpini where the Via Appia met the road to Herdonia; Oscan inscriptions, among them a dedication to the goddess Mefitis, recall its earlier life. In the Social War Sulla besieged it in 89 BC, although, as the historian Velleius Paterculus proudly records, his own ancestor Minatius Magius stood by Rome. Later a Roman colony with baths, theatre and amphitheatre, it was destroyed in 662 AD by the Byzantine emperor Constans the Second.
