Albanianis

Alphen aan den Rijn

Albanianis is Albaniana, a fort on the Old Rhine at Alphen aan den Rijn in the Netherlands, where Roman tiles have been found. The Roman register of routes, which writes Albinianis, sets it ten Roman miles, about fifteen kilometres, from Lugdunum at the mouth of the Rhine, and Alphen does lie at about that distance from Leiden. The first printed edition of the map misread the name as Albamanis, and that error was copied for generations.
