Altuburos

Medeina · Mdeina

Altuburos is Althiburos, the ruins of Henchir Medeina in Tunisia, a native town with a strong Punic character on the road from Carthage to Theveste. Its people worshipped Baal Hammon with Punic sacrifices at a sacred precinct, and three magistrates called sufetes governed it, until it became a municipium under Hadrian and later a colony. Its triumphal arch, theatre, temples and aqueducts survive as ruins. On the map four figures of sixteen miles, some twenty-four kilometres each, crowd together here; one probably belongs to the stage from Mutia, which lacks its own.
