Ameria

Amelia

Listen to the story

Ameria, now Amelia in Umbria, claimed to be very old indeed: Cato the Elder reckoned it was founded nine hundred and sixty-three years before Rome's war with King Perseus, around 1134 BC, and its huge walls of polygonal blocks still impress. It was the home town of Sextus Roscius, whom the young Cicero defended against a charge of murdering his father, and its apples, pears and willows, used to tie up vines, were famous.
