Anderitum
Javols
Anderitum is Javols, the chief town of the Gabali in the Lozère; the Greek geographer Ptolemy calls it Anderedon. Later it was simply named after its people, the city of the Gabali. The Roman naturalist Pliny praised the cheese of the Gabalic district. Older research long placed Anderitum at Antérieux near Chaudes-Aigues, but a milestone found near Saint-Léger secures Javols. A late Roman list of garrisons names Anderetian soldiers and even a fleet at Paris, but whether they came from here is doubtful. On the map, the figure onward is squeezed awkwardly across a river.
